Penka Vatova is a member of the Department of New and Contemporary Bulgarian Literature. Her research interests are in the history of Bulgarian literature after the Liberation. She has been a long-term researcher of the Bulgarian literary periodical press, of the problems of the Bulgarian travelogue and of the contemporary Bulgarian poetry, of the cultural identity of the Bulgarian diaspora. She participates in a number of research projects of the Institute for Literature related to the study and preservation of our literary heritage. She is the lead researcher of the projects "Periodicals and Literature" (since 2003) and "Bulgarian Literature after the Liberation (1878) - personalities and processes, documents and artifacts (digital dictionary)" (since 2017).
